Smallholder Farmers & Agroforestry

At the heart of Khumbu Brew is a commitment to the farmers who grow our coffee. We work directly with smallholder farming families across Nepal's coffee regions, building long-term relationships based on fair pricing, respect, and genuine partnership.

Our farmers practise agroforestry, promoted by The Glacier Trust, EcoHimal, and HICODEF, the NGOs with whom we are proudly associated — a sustainable farming method that supports biodiversity, protects soil health, and helps coffee plants thrive alongside other crops.

Agroforestry also provides farmers with additional income streams from fruit and timber, reducing their dependence on coffee alone and creating more stable livelihoods. It's farming that works with nature, not against it.

Coffee in Nepal

Nepal's coffee story is one of remarkable potential and untapped opportunity. Whilst farmers in Nepal have been cultivating Arabica coffee for over 50 years, coffee is thought to have first been introduced to Nepal in the late 1930s. Its specialty coffee has remained largely unknown to the global market. This is changing.

Sourced from 1,000m+, Nepal's coffee-growing regions benefit from ideal conditions: rich volcanic soils and diverse microclimates that create distinct flavour profiles. The country's coffee is grown by smallholder farmers who have developed deep knowledge of their land, cultivating coffee using sustainable agroforestry practices that regenerate soil and maintain biodiversity.

What makes Nepali coffee special is its authenticity. It's not a commodity—it's a reflection of place, people, and purpose. Every cup tells the story of farmers who care deeply about their craft and their land.

The Solukhumbu Story

In the shadow of Mount Everest lies Solukhumbu, a region where coffee cultivation has become a lifeline for local communities. Here, at elevations that challenge many crops, smallholder farmers have developed an intimate knowledge of their land—understanding microclimates, soil composition, and seasonal rhythms with remarkable precision.

In response to the changing and challenging climate, Solukhumbu's coffee is grown using agroforestry methods, where coffee plants thrive alongside other fruit, nut, and shade-giving species. This approach isn't just sustainable—it's regenerative. The shade trees prevent soil erosion, maintain biodiversity, and create a more resilient ecosystem. Farmers harvest coffee cherries by hand, selecting only the ripest fruit, then process them using methods refined over the last decade, since they were properly trained by our NGO partners.

The result is coffee with distinctive character: notes of dark chocolate and treacle, balanced with gentle spice and a smooth, lingering finish. It's coffee that reflects its origin—complex, nuanced, and deeply authentic.

How to Brew

Grind: Medium-fine grind works best for most brewing methods. Grind just before brewing to preserve aromatics and flavour complexity.

Water Temperature: Brew between 90-96°C (195-205°F). Water that's too hot can over-extract and create bitterness; too cool and you'll miss the coffee's full character.

Brewing Ratio: We recommend 1:16 coffee to water as a starting point. Adjust to your taste preference—a bit more coffee for strength, more water for a lighter cup.

Brewing Time: Aim for 3-4 minutes for pour-over, 4 minutes for French press, or follow your espresso machine's timing. The goal is balanced extraction that highlights the coffee's natural sweetness and complexity.

Freshness: For the best flavour, enjoy within 4 months of the roast date, when stored in an airtight container away from light and heat.

Why Nepal?

Nepal's coffee-growing regions remain one of the world's best-kept secrets. Nestled between 1,000m and 2,500m above sea level, the mid-hills of Nepal are characterised by diverse microclimates and varied soils, creating ideal conditions in places for high-quality Arabica coffee.

Coffee from regions including Solukhumbu, Nawalparasi, and Lalitpur has consistently scored above 80 points in internationally recognised Q testing, placing it firmly within speciality coffee grade. Yet Nepal's coffee remains largely unknown to the global speciality coffee community—until now.

We're introducing the world to Nepal's remarkable coffee. Farmers have perfected their craft over the last decade, growing coffee with care in the unique conditions of the Himalayan mid-hills.
